The Development and Validation of a Scale to Measure Subjective Fairness: Caring for Aging Parents

Abstract
This article defines the construct of subjective fairness and describes the development of the subjective fairness scale. Subjective fairness entails considering two dimensions of caring aging parents. One dimension is a historically developed norm which has defined what adult children have to do for aging parents. The other dimension is how to share caring burden fairly among adult children. In order to measure this attribute, we used a sequential exploratory mixed methods design in rural and urban communities in Korea. In the qualitative phase, 16 clients were asked to elicit themes related to subjective fairness and 121 questionnaire items were extracted and were further refined through content analysis by expert groups. In the first quantitative phase, self-rated items were tested on 200 participants, and the reliability and validity of the questionnaire items were confirmed through exploratory factor analyses. In the second quantitative phase, self-rated items were tested on 1,299 participants. The result shows that the final 13-item subjective fairness scale has two-factor structure; the first concerns economic fairness, the second affective fairness. The Cronbach``s ¥á values were .890 and .876 respectively and total Cronbach``s ¥á value was .919, showing high internal consistency. The convergent validity and the discriminant validity between the questionnaires of economic fairness and affective fairness were examined through the confirmatory factor analysis. Therefore, the configuration validity for the factors of the ``Subjective Fairness Scale; Caring for Aging Parents`` were confirmed. In addition, the application of scale developed in this study and the meaning of the study were discussed.
